FOR - Foundations of Recovery

The Foundations of Recovery Program (FOR) is an addiction treatment program that helps Veterans develop new recovery skills through a residential program (Segment I) followed by a personalized recovery plan that follows patients for three months post-completion (Segment II).

The focus of FOR is to help newly recovering and/or those with occurring mental health and physical health concerns learn the basics of early recovery. Daily groups teach: Coping Skills Problem Solving Relapse Prevention Motivational Tools Introduction to the 12 Steps.

Please note that the Foundations of Recovery Program (FOR) is not a drop-in clinic. All visits and admissions must be scheduled by the Addiction Consultation and Treatment (ACT).

First Step

First Step is a Residential Rehabilitation program focused on the treatment of addiction. First Step is a therapeutic community that provides ongoing assessment, recovery planning, psycho education, and support within a social setting that values personal responsibility, problem-solving, practice, personal relationships, and play.

Within this framework, First Step integrates a variety of empirically supported treatments such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

An ongoing weekly aftercare group is also offered. Substance use disorders (SUDS) are the most prevalent of all psychiatric disorders.

Most First Step residents use multiple substances, with alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, and heroin being the most common. Although alcohol is the most frequently abused substance, only a minority of First Step residents use alcohol exclusively.

First Step Admission Criteria:

  • Capable of self care
  • Not in need of a higher level of care
  • Motivated and able to actively participate in intensive treatment
  • Recent and/or history of substance abuse

HVRP

The primary goal of the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program (HVRP) is to help Veterans return to employment and stable housing while maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle. Rehabilitation involves roughly 90 days of personal problem solving and life-skills training in a peer-support format, and an additional 90 days for job search and employment.

The 70-bed residential program has a remarkable record of success during its 20+ years of service, serving over 3,000 Veterans with many going on to complete and graduate while rebuilding their lives. Alumni, outpatients and residents interact in an extended community that promotes and supports the long-term success of Veterans coming through HVRP.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

The VA offers many treatment options to those struggling with substance use. In addition to residential treatment and community based options the VA also has a wide array of Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

These IOP programs are dependent on the VA facility where you receive your care and can be one-on-one, group, or a variety of other types of modalities. Please check with your local VA provider, social worker, or program for the available programs in your area.
